The Stack Restaurant & Bar // Muchalls, Stonehaven

So this place is a hidden wee gem that I'm glad I've come across! The Stack Restaurant & Bar is located near Stonehaven in a wee coastal village called Muchalls! The Stack is owned and run by it's head chef Andy Smart and oh I was impressed!

My friend had visited here a few months ago and told me to check it out but I had never gotten round to going yet so when I spied it on Itison a few weeks ago I thought we would give it a try. Because it was nice and close to Stonehaven we thought that it would be a nice place to take Euan's granny along too. So with our little deal purchased we booked ourselves a table and paid a visit.

This place is honestly so cute (I mean look at the wee entrance door!) It's a bit hidden off the main road when you come into Muchalls but it was well sign posted so you can easily find it without sat nav. When walking in the door I was glad to see that it was dog friendly as we quite often take the pugs with us when we head to Stonehaven for a visit so it's great to know that the next time we come here we can take them along with us.

The first thing I spotted when we made our way in was the selection of gins that they had on a shelf behind the bar. I love a good gin so I instantly knew that Euan would be the designated driver for the evening. We were soon greeted by a member of staff and shown over to our table. We were here on a Thursday night and I was surprised to see so many full tables around us for such a well hidden place. We soon ordered drinks order and I treated myself to a gin and tonic because why not! Thursday is basically the weekend right? The Botanist with cucumber and watermelon tonic, I mean how could I say no to that? It was so nice and refreshing and I now need to get my hands on a case of the tonic and a bottle of the gin for my collection!

With our Itison deal two of us received two courses, we opted for mains and deserts however you could pick starters if you preferred. I normally would go for a starter and main but for some reason I was fancying something sweet, so pudding it was! I had already admired the menu online before we came so I had a rough idea what I was planning on choosing. The Stack do a fixed price menu with the option to pick 1, 2 or 3 courses for set prices. While we were reading over the menu we were all offered some warm homemade bread with butter to enjoy while we decided what to have.

Euan and his granny both ordered The Stack Ale Battered Haddock with Triple Cooked Chips, Crushed Peas and Tartare Sauce while I went for the BBQ and Bourbon Braised Feather-blade of Beef with Cheddar Mash and oh I was happy with my choice. The cheddar mash was so smooth and creamy with a lovely hint of cheese while not being over powering and the beef was cooked to perfection so much that it just fell apart when I ran my fork and knife through it. The only issue I had with this dish was that I felt it needed more of the BBQ/bourbon sauce, however it was an absolute treat and even Mr Fussy asked if he could have a taste!

Up next was pudding and it's rare that I get food envy at the table and want someone else's desert but this one time it happened and I was majorly jealous of Euan's pudding! He decided to go for the Sticky Toffee Pudding with Banana and Salted Caramel Sauce and Honeycomb Ice Cream (WHY did I not take a photo!) While I went for The Dark Chocolate Brownie with Brambles and Salted Caramel Ice Cream. This dish was meant to come with a white chocolate sorbet but I asked the waiter if I could swap this out as salted caramel is my ultimate favourite. Don't get me wrong my pudding was lovely, the brownie was warm and gooey in the middle but it was a little heavy for me and since I had scoffed my main course I was struggling to find the space to finish it while Euan was practically licking his plate clean! He was nice and let me have a wee taste and it was the lightest sticky toffee pudding I have ever tasted and the hint of banana throughout it was just right. But that salted caramel sauce! I'd go back and ask for a side jug to drink I think, it was that good!

I would definitely come back to The Stack again for another visit and I'm really glad we made the visit. The food was great and so were the staff! It had a nice casual atmosphere and they most certainly put a lot of thought into the dishes that they serve on the menu. We will most certainly be returning soon with family. Oh and the pugs!
